A Singular Destiny is a forthcoming novel - to be released in February 2009 - written by Keith R.A. DeCandido. Announced at the New York Comic-Con in April 2008, the novel will follow on from the events of the Star Trek: Destiny trilogy, and "deal with the fallout from what happens". [1]
Describing it as a "Clancy-style political thriller", DeCandido noted that the novel will not focus on any of the main crews - with the protagonist being a newly-created civilian character - although familiar characters will appear. It will center on the political repercussions from Destiny, featuring characters from DeCandido's previous work, Articles of the Federation. [2] The novel will also feature the Aventine, a vessel introduced in Destiny and commanded by Ezri Dax. [3]
According to DeCandido, the title derives "from a comment by Thomas Macaulay, Lord Babington, writing in 1831 about Boswell's Life of Johnson." He further notes that the title, and the quote:
- "What a singular destiny has been that of this remarkable man!—To be regarded in his own age as a classic, and in ours as a companion! To receive from his contemporaries that full homage which men of genius have in general received only from posterity; to be more intimately known to posterity than other men are known to their contemporaries!" [4]
"[fit] the book nicely". [5]
The cover art for the novel was revealed at the Shore Leave convention on 11 July 2008.
