The series was originally envisioned by editor John Ordover as running for twelve books, comprising six duologies. Ultimately, the series was reduced to nine, with Keith R.A. DeCandido writing the single volume to close out the storyline.
The titles of the series were derived from Ecclesiastes 3 in the Bible.
