The Cardassian system is the home star system of the Cardassians and the political center of the Cardassian Union. (DS9: "Explorers") In 2375, the Dominion began their withdrawal to the Cardassian system during the waning days of the Dominion War. (DS9: "The Dogs of War")

• The Star Trek: Star Charts states that the Cardassian system is made up of a total of eight planets and contains two asteroid belts. It also cites a distance of 5.25 light years between Bajor and Cardassia.

• The RPG book (non-canon) Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Narrator's Toolkit, published in 1999, already gave the precise data:
  • the star is a bright red dwarf (M2 V type)
  • the first two planets are class F
  • Cardassia Prime is the third planet in the system
  • Cardassia VI and VII are class J gas giants
  • Cardassia VIII is class G
