The Daedalus-class was an early class of Starfleet vessel. The Daedalus-class was commissioned soon after the formation of the Federation in 2161 and decommissioned in 2196. (TNG: "Power Play")
- This class of starship was presumably named after the character of Daedalus in Greek mythology.

[edit] Background
According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, the Horizon-type and the Daedalus-class are one and the same; however, no on-screen evidence supports it.
[edit] Service dates
Although it has not explicitly directed at the Daedalus-class, it is known from dialog in ENT: "These Are the Voyages..." that warp-7 starships came into service in or sometime soon after 2161. Since the Daedalus-class is known to have remained in service 35 years beyond that point, it is reasonable to believe that this class was among the first warp-7 starships. It is possible, that this class of ship was designed to replace the aging NX type ships.
[edit] Apocrypha
- A Daedalus-class starship named the USS Lovell is prominently featured in (and on the cover of) the non-canon Star Trek: SCE novel Foundations. The USS Lovell is also active in the Star Trek: Vanguard novels. The ship is shown outside Starbase 47 (Vanguard) on the cover of the second book of the series Summon the Thunder.
- In Michael Jan Friedman's novel Starfleet: Year One, competition among the early Starfleet's captains for command of the first Daedalus was one of the main plot threads - though the events of this novel have been ignored by later novels, as it was contradicted by Star Trek: Enterprise.
- Star Trek: Legacy was the first Star Trek video game to feature a Daedalus-class starship, in 2006.
