A die (plural: dice) was a small polyhedron used for generating a random number or other symbol. On Earth, the most common dice were cubes marked on each of their six faces with a different number of dots (ranging from one to six), and were typically used in playing games or gambling.
In 2365, while trapped in a re-creation of the Royale Hotel on Theta VIII, Commanders Riker and Data used loaded dice (altered to roll in their favor) to break the bank in craps and purchase the hotel, effectively allowing their escape from the artificial reality. (TNG: "The Royale")
