The Dixon Hill series was a novel series written by author Tracy Tormé, and featured detective Dixon Hill, who first appeared in the short story The Big Good-Bye, published on Earth in the pulp magazine Amazing Detective Stories in 1934. The second Dixon Hill story, The Long Dark Tunnel was published in 1936. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye") Additional stories include The National Sheriff, The Listening Man, The Parrot Claw, and The Black Orchid. (TNG: "The Emissary")

The Black Orchid was made into a film, Dixon Hill and the Black Orchid. (ENT: "Cogenitor")

Due to malfunctions caused by a probe scan of the Enterprise by the Jarada in 2364, Jean-Luc Picard, Data, Beverly Crusher, and Whalen were stuck in a Dixon Hill holonovel in the ship's holodeck where they confronted the gangster Cyrus Redblock and his minions, including the obnoxious Felix Leech. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye")

The series would become a successful holographic novel series as well, thanks to Broht & Forrester, a publishing company that recreated the Dixon Hill adventures during the 24th century. (VOY: "Author, Author")
