Donald Varley

Captain Donald Varley was the commanding officer of the Federation starship USS Yamato and an old friend of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. In 2365, he discovered the coordinates of the planet Iconia and violated the Romulan Neutral Zone to prevent Iconian technology from falling into Romulan hands. Varley was killed when the Yamato was destroyed by an Iconian software transmission. (TNG: "Contagion")
