Electrodynamic turbulence

From Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek reference.

Electrodynamic turbulence is an atmospheric phenomenon caused by solar flares. A thermal inversion gradient is created in the ionosphere, resulting in strong, unpredictable currents. This turbulence poses a hazard to shuttlecraft, and interferes with sensors and transporters. Ships can be protected from electrodynamic turbulence by a dielectric field.

In 2372, heavy solar flare activity caused electrodynamic turbulence throughout the Drayan star system, including on their crysata moon. This turbulence caused the crash of a Drayan shuttle and a shuttle carrying Lieutenant Tuvok and Ensign Bennet, and impeded USS Voyager's efforts to rescue them. (VOY: "Innocence")

Electrodynamic turbulence in the Nekrit Expanse hampered efforts by the USS Voyager to contact Commander Chakotay and Ensign Kaplan in 2373. (VOY: "Unity")

Later in 2373, a shuttle carrying Tuvok, Neelix, and Sklar crashed on a Nezu colony planet due to a layer of atmospheric electrodynamic turbulence. (VOY: "Rise")
