The Entente was possibly named after the entente cordiale.
The Entente was mentioned by name, registry, and type designation in voiceover dialog during the Epsilon IX station sequence. Franz Joseph's Star Fleet Technical Manual lists both the ship name and registry and states that the Entente is a Federation-class starship.
The mention of the Entente in Star Trek: The Motion Picture would normally suggest that this class is indeed the one mentioned in the Technical Manual. Consequently, this would present an apparent discontinuity in the (already flawed) registry system, because is it normally assumed that the USS Excelsior (NX-2000) was a newly-built ship as of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
