Fire ants are a highly successful Earth insect that tends to inhabit countries with warmer climates. These ants can be found throughout the southern regions of North America, much of South America, and Australia. They tend to be red in color and have a sting which is extremely painful to Humans.
Ensign Kim described the Akritirian clamp neural device as being covered with fire ants after he and Lieutenant Paris were fitted with them. (VOY: "The Chute")
