Magnetic field

From Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek reference.

A magnetic field is a field in which its particles are charged with electricity, causing them to point to one direction.

This field has the ability to influence materials which are sensitive to magnetism, like magnets or iron. All planets and stars, large or small, have a magnetic field. Its strength depends on the mass and materials of the object.

The science of field density may be related to magnetic fields

Naturally-occurring magnetic fields, such as from planets polar regions, can interfere with sensors. (TNG: "Final Mission"; DS9: "Whispers")

Duranium emits a magnetic field that can interfere with sensors. (DS9: "Dramatis Personae")

During a scan of Aldean DNA, Doctor Beverly Crusher was able to confirm that a failure of the magnetic field of Aldea was not responsible for the Aldeans' sterility. (TNG: "When The Bough Breaks")

Artificial magnetic fields, better know as electromagnetic fields, can be created and manipulated for a number of uses, including containing anti-matter in antimatter containmnet pods, magnetizing gravity boots, and generating an Electromagnetic pulse to jam communications. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, ENT: "Babel One", DS9: "Sacrifice of Angels")
