Michael O'Brien was the father of Miles O'Brien.

Michael was initially disappointed with his son's decision to apply to Starfleet, having hoped that his son would become a cello player. However, after finding out how much Miles had accomplished, Michael eventually became proud of his son. (DS9: "Shadowplay")

Michael's first wife died in 2368, and he remarried the following year. By 2372, Michael and his new wife were residing in Dublin. (DS9: "Homefront").
