Mayama's television and movie career started in the mid-1960s, lasted until the late 1970s, and included a little over twenty roles. These were followed with supporting roles in the 1969 adventure Impasse (co-starring Jeff Corey), the 1970 drama The Hawaiians (with James Gregory and Keye Luke), and the 1973 blaxploitation film That Man Bolt (starring Fred Williamson).

Besides Star Trek, other TV shows on which she appeared include I Spy, It Takes a Thief (with Malachi Throne), The Flying Nun (in an episode with Gregory Sierra), The Beverly Hillbillies, Ironside, Medical Center (with Glenn Corbett), Hawaii Five-O, Kojak, and Mannix (with Clyde Kusatsu and Bill Zuckert). She was also a regular on the NBC series Hey, Landlord, which debuted the same week as Star Trek but lasted only one season. Mayama was last seen in a 1979 episode of M*A*S*H*, the hit series whose regular cast included David Ogden Stiers.
