Ophiucus

From Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek reference

Jump to: navigation, search

The Ophiucus system is a star system with at least six planets. (TOS: "Mudd's Women"; TAS: "Mudd's Passion")

[edit] Background

There is no real star named Ophiucus, Ophiuchus is the latin name for the stellar constellation Serpent Holder. Thus, the Ophiucus system might orbit any star in this constellation. Since the colony on Ophiucus III seems to be a Human settlement, the following is a list of the nearest stars from Sol in Ophiuchus, one of which the planet might orbit:

  • Barnard's Star: 5.9 light years
  • 36 Ophiuchi: 19.5 light years
  • Eta Ophiuchi or "Sabik": 59 light years
  • Alpha Ophiuchi or "Ras Alhague": 60 light years

The Star Trek: Star Charts suggest 36 Ophiuchi to be the location of the Ophiucus system, of which the primary and secondary stars are an orange main sequence dwarf of spectral class K1 and the tertiary star of spectral class K5.
