Piezoelectric effect

The piezoelectric effect refers to the generation of an electric field by crystals under stress. This effect was detrimental to the planets of the Selcundi Drema sector, notably Drema IV and Drema V, which both had high concentrations of dilithium cystals. The crystals, growing in unusually aligned lattices, were generating an electric field that had begun to tear Drema IV apart. This type of field was also responsible for the destruction of Drema V some 150 years earlier. The USS Enterprise-D eliminated this effect by launching class 1 probes equipped with harmonic resonators to shatter the crystals. (TNG: "Pen Pals")
