A polaron field was a field of polaron particles that could mask warp engine emissions, particularly the ion trail left by starships.
Major Kira Nerys used a polaron field to mask her engine emissions when she took a runabout on an unauthorized mission to locate an assassin in 2373. (DS9: "The Darkness and the Light")
