The quantum warp field is the means by which a starship is propelled at quantum slipstream velocity.
The Federation starship USS Voyager had trouble generating a stable quantum warp field in 2374 when attempting to pursue the USS Dauntless, an advanced alien vessel designed by Species 116. Eventually, the crew of Voyager managed to stabilize their quantum warp field. (VOY: "Hope and Fear")
