RMS Titanic

From Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek reference

Jump to: navigation, search

The RMS (Royal Mail Steamship) Titanic was an ancient Earth ship which sailed on that planet's Atlantic Ocean. The ship carried passengers and mail. Touted as unsinkable thanks to innovative transverse bulkheads, the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City in April, 1912. 1,523 humans were lost, and 705 were saved. The ship was equipped with only twenty lifeboats, not enough to save even half of the people onboard. The ship became a sort of pop culture icon, spawning hundreds of books, movies, and other forms of media.

In an alternate 2374, Lieutenant Tom Paris of the starship USS Voyager created transverse bulkheads based on the Titanic to strengthen the ship's hull after successive Krenim attacks. When Captain Janeway reminded Paris of the Titanic's fate, he assured her he had improved the design. (VOY: "Year of Hell")

[edit] Background

The script of the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Playing God" described the verteron nodes in the wormhole as being "like icebergs blocking the Titanic".
