Sean is an Earth name, originating from Ireland. Miles and Keiko O'Brien considered naming their second child Sean. However, in the Bajoran language, "Sean" means "swamp". (DS9: "Let He Who Is Without Sin...")

It seems likely that the name would have been a tribute to Miles O'Brien's 20th century ancestor Sean Aloysius O'Brien, who was mentioned in "Bar Association".
