Torona system

From Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek reference

Jump to: navigation, search

The Torona system was a non-aligned inhabited star system in the Jaradan sector, an area of the galaxy. This system was of strategic value to the Federation in the 24th century as it was situated near to the borders of both the Klingon and Romulan empires.

The system has been visited at least twice by Federation starships on a diplomatic mission to align the Jarada, the native inhabitants of the system, with the Federation.

In the first recorded event, the captain of a starship in 2344 committed a faux pas when he mispronounced the syllables of the opening greeting with the Jarada.

Twenty years later, Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise-D successfully attempted the same greeting. (TNG: "The Big Goodbye", "Samaritan Snare")

In the real world, Torona is an extinct language once spoken in the Sudan, a country in Africa.
