Trainee denoted an individual undergoing some form of training.
In order to earn a name, a Kazon would first have to serve as a trainee. Many Kazon trainees lost their lives trying to earn the Jal title. (VOY: "Initiations")
In Starfleet, trainees were Starfleet officers, enlisted personnel, and cadets. They served in Starfleet Training Command.
In the 2280s Starfleet uniform, Trainees were a separate division, denoted with a red turtleneck. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan; Star Trek III: The Search for Spock; Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
In the mid 22nd century, Starfleet Trainee Malcolm Reed suffered illness training in the EV simulator at Lunaport. (ENT: "The Catwalk") While trainees, both Malcolm Reed and Charles Tucker III often frequented the 602 Club. (ENT: "Shuttlepod One")
In 2285, the USS Enterprise was classified as a training vessel. It was comprised of a crew of instructors, trainees, cadets and midshipmen. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)
In 2371, Tuvok classified a group of Maquis as Trainees while undergoing field training. (VOY: "Learning Curve")
