The USS Buran (NCC-57580) was a Challenger-class Federation starship that was in service during the mid-24th century.

In 2367, the Buran fought the Borg at the Battle of Wolf 359 in 2367. It was destroyed, along with 38 other starships. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II").

The name of this ship is derived from Ed Miarecki, the creator of the design study and filming model of the Buran. [1] Its class and registry was derived from production sources and revealed in the Star Trek Encyclopedia.

The name "Buran", which means "snowstorm" in Russian, descends from the Soviet Union's 11F35 K1 Buran (Бура́н) shuttle; the only orbiter completed flew a single unmanned mission in 1988 before the program was canceled due to lack of funding.

Shots of the Buran were reused in the ship graveyard at Surplus Depot Z15 in TNG: "Unification I".
