[edit] Background
The Crazy Horse was named for Chief Crazy Horse of the Oglala Sioux tribe, who resisted American takeover of his people's lands in the 1870s. It is interesting to note that the USS Lakota, another Excelsior-class ship, was named after Crazy Horse's tribe; two other Excelsior-class vessels, the USS Malinche and USS Tecumseh, are also named after indigenous persons from the Americas.
The first edition of Star Trek Encyclopedia listed this starship's registry as NCC-50446 and her class as Cheyenne-class. After her appearance in "The Pegasus", the 2nd edition of the encyclopedia changed the class, but retained the registry number.
